A Chinese woman lives a quiet life for herself, singing and dancing to celebrate the heyday of the Belle Epoque. The female lead doesn’t have a single line of dialogue in the entire film. Have you ever bought a band’s album and found that instead of new material, it contains a few old B-sides, remixes, and a few new songs for added value? Of course you have, at least if you’re over 35. In many ways, Jia Zhang-ke’s “Caught by the Tides” is just that, but it’s also a statement about his career and the changing face of the world around him. Qiao Qiao (Zhao Tao) has an affair with Guao Bin (Zhubin Li), but he moves on, and Qiao Qiao stays on his heels. She follows him around the country and over the years. But when she reaches her destination, what she wanted may not be the right thing for her. In fact, the plot is irrelevant, because much of it has already been written and filmed over the years; now it’s just a new use. Excerpts from films like Unknown Joys (2002), Still Life (2006) and Mountains May Leave (2015), if I remember correctly. This allows for a realistic depiction of the two main characters across time and their different ages. The scenes are therefore different but very familiar and provide something of a retrospective of Jia’s work in a more direct and well-executed way than Takeshi Kitano attempted with Takeshis (2005). The problem with shooting a film this way is that while it’s perfectly serviceable as a narrative film, imposing what’s already there makes the film feel a bit odd in terms of its flow. It feels more like a series of vignettes than a well-constructed piece of work. After watching many films, the outtakes remind you of the original script, and so it doesn’t feel like one story, but rather several stories strung together, but there are some nice coincidences that convey Jia’s message. Text messages on an old Nokia become TikTok videos on the latest smartphone. Jia is very ironic in his view of technology. TikTok fame is more about cheap advertising than real fame and fortune; and service robots can be easily fooled by simple questions. Technology has played an interesting role in shaping the nature of human relationships, especially in the last twenty years. If you know Jia’s work, you’ll immediately recognize what he’s talking about. But if you approach his work with an open mind, it can be a bit of an odd film that doesn’t quite fit together. Some scenes don’t really seem to fit together; others were added as they were available. So for the uninitiated, it may require some background work, and it’s more for longtime fans. But you might feel like you’re watching “Still Life” again. Has life evolved over the past eighteen years?Politic1983.home.blog.
